With just a day left for Katti Batti to hit the screens, many are under the impression that this yet-another-romantic saga isn't fresh from the Bollywood oven. Instead, the film is a rip-off of the 2009 Hollywood romantic comedy 500 Days of Summer. A few minutes into the trailer of the Nikhil Advani directorial venture, and a sense of deja vu takes over. From a few shots to the characterisation, the similarity between the two films shrieks out of many a frame. Payal (Kangana Ranaut) can be easily mistaken for Summer (Zooey Deschanel) and the heartbroken Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) finds his reincarnation in Maddy (Imran Khan). The Bollywood tale of a madly-in-love guy who goes all bonkers after his girlfriend leaves him doesn't seem too novel.
But lead actor Imran Khan rubbishes rumours of any similarity between the two films. In fact, the actor maintains that his film, which is to hit the theatres on September 18, is not inspired by the Hollywood flick in any way whatsoever.' Since I have seen 500 Days of Summer, I can easily say that Katti Batti is not inspired by it. The only similarity between the two films is that the main protagonists go through a break-up.
Apart from that, there is nothing common between them. Honestly, Katti Batti begins on an entirely different note,' says the 32-year-old actor.Touted to be an unusual love story, Katti Batti revolves around a commitment-phobic girl who leaves her boyfriend after being in a seven-year relationship.
Imran says that Katti Batti is unlike any other romantic film; in fact, it begins where most love stories end. Moreover, Imran maintains that the film deals with the real issues in any relationship. 'Katti Batti is a love story which begins where every romantic film ends. Romantic films in general, not just Bollywood, are these boy-meets-girl-and-they-live-happily-ever-after stories.
But what happens after that is the real deal. Katti Batti begins with the end of a seven-year relationship between the two protagonists.

The film brings out the realities of being in a relationship and when sharing responsibilities take a toll on the people involved. I can say that because I have been in a live-in for some time. And when I used to watch these romantic films, I used to think that this is not real. What they show is just those initial rosy months of the relationship.
But Katti Batti is different,' says the Gori Tere Pyaar Mein actor. In fact, it's this relatability with the characters which made Imran sign on the dotted line. 'While signing a film, relatability works for me. When you watch my character on screen, you will be able to relate with it. Maddy and Payal are like any other couple. Anyone in love would be able to empathise with our characters in Katti Batti,' says Imran. It is for the first time that Imran and Kangana will be seen together in a film, and Imran is all praise for his National Award-winning co-star.
'Kangana is very dedicated and believes in self-recruitment. She keeps herself involved in her character. Kangana comes on the film sets in the mindspace of the shooting of that day. If we are shooting a heavy scene, you can't talk to her. On the other hand, I am the kind of person who would joke around in between the shots. While working with her, our rapport was purely professional. I didn't get to know her much during the shooting of the film.

It was only during the promotions of Katti Batti that I got to know her,' says the Delhi Belly actor.
Parents need to know that (500) Days of Summer is a smart romantic dramedy that's age-appropriate for teens and up, but its thoughtful exploration of relationships may speak more to those in college and older. It has a sweet-yet-realistic view of relationships that’s refreshing given the usual formulaic dreck in this genre. Do expect some frank talk about sex (as well as some kissing and an implied shower sex scene), drinking (sometimes to excess), and swearing (including one 'f-k').
