I vowed not to skip any audiobooks on the library shelf so I could hear them all but it was a struggle to finish this one. As I was listening I realized it isn't just a bad story but the people in it are awful people.
I state my case below. Why Sonny (the main female protagonist) is an awful girlfriend: She contemplates her 'coral pink toenails and her life'. That is someone way too shallow to hang around. She plays into strict female stereotypes because she takes hours to dress but makes up for it by 'cooking delilcious meals for her man, keeps an immaculate kitchen and always does the dishes'. Getting rid of that kind of stereotype is what the Seventies were for. She is not a believable character because she is described as both brainy and ditsy yet all her actions indicate she is ditsy and ditsy.
Yet she supposedly graduated Magna Cum Laude. She is insanely jealous and borderline psychotic. Sonny gets mad at her 'man' Mac for being late off of a fifteen hour flight to Rome and then goes off to do something she ALREADY HAD PLANNED! I would drop her then and there, no matter how 'beautiful' she is supposed to be. She gets mad at Mac because her ploy to 'flaunt her naked left hand pointedly' to get him to propose doesn't work. Also there is something wrong with her physically.
At one point her boyfriend is watching her walk and thinks,'the twitch of her butt was natural and beautiful'. If I see someone's butt twitching I think they have some kind of private itch that needs to be taken care of in private. She is insanely jealous. She gets mad because Mac invites Alley, the actress who doesn't act, to come to his house because she got a death threat and Sonnny gets mad because Mac must like her for inviting her over. She also won't let Mac find the missing actress who doesn't act alone despite the fact that Sonny was almost killed the night before. Why Mac is a terrible private eye: He has to ask Sonny if a woman that is clearly lying is lying because 'you're a woman, Sonny'.
He also forces Sonny to break into a house, rifle through stuff and escape through the doggy door. But see this is all ok because he has, 'A nice bottle of champagne' for her.
Also, one of the characters, Ron, goes missing and who finds out where he went? Not Mac the private investigator, it's Sonnny. Who finds out who has been stalking the actress? Mac's assistant. When Mac finds a body buried under rubble does he check for a pulse, try to get help, call an ambulance?
He checks to see if the expensive watch on the body IS STILL WORKINIG.Why Alley is not really an actress: For starters she doesn't act in the book. She attends Cannes, cooks, runs arounds, wallows in self pity and does not ever act, even when she is trying to lie, Sonny figures her out.How you know they stalker person is evil: The stalker cuts up expensive clothing. And despite the fact that there are multiple murders, the thing that frightens the characters the most in this is the fact that expensive dresses are now not wearable. Why I hope there are no more Elizabeth Adler books at the library: Because I will have to listen to the exploits of these awful, shallow, fantastically rich and totally self-centered annoying characters.Pre-Listen Guess: Man this is gonna suck! The author implies that it is a matter of a few minutes to drive from Malibu to Marina del Rey (54 in current traffic) or from Malibu to Bel Air (at least 45 min). And that's one way! Even more unbelievable, at the drop of a hat, they fly off to Rome or Paris, have lots of adventures and are back in CA in a day or 2. It takes me that long to pack for such a trip! His girlfriend Sunny (Sonora Sky Coto de Alvarez) wishes Mac would propose.Mac lives in a Malibu Colony bungalow with his dog Pirate, rescued from a highway. While strolling on the beach late at night, Mac hears a woman scream and goes to help.
She shoots at him and he flees. Next day millionaire Ron Perrin, in whose house the woman screamed, denies the event but wants to hire Mac to discover who has been following him.
Allie Ray, the movie star wife Ron is divorcing, also wants to hire Mac to discover who has been following her, and sending threatening notes. While he is vacationing in Rome with Sunny, Mac encounters the woman who had screamed and shot at him in Malibu. Marisa tells him she is Ron's fiancee, flaunts a huge diamond ring, and asks Mac to find Ron, who has disappeared. When Mac returns from Rome, Ron's right-hand man Sam Demarco also asks Mac to find Ron, and to find out what the FBI wants from Ron.Famous movie star Allie Ray had humble beginnings, and she is lonely surrounded by luxury.
She plans to return to being Mary Allison Raycheck one day. But first she must do her job: appear in Cannes at her film release party.Mac meets another PI who thinks Ron killed his girlfriend. Sunny and Mac travel to Palm Springs looking for clues and find a body. They investigate all the people in Ron's and Allie's lives, wondering who might carry a grudge.Allie Ray escapes fame & fortune to the French countryside, where she works in a restaurant. She becomes interested in a local landowner, but still misses and loves her husband.Sunny goes on trip by herself to Baja CA and finds Ron, but then loses him.Sunny and Mac go back to Rome, where they find another body. One of Allie's friends tells Sunny where Allie is, just before a newspaper reporter tells the world.
Mac finally learns who the killer is, and races to save Allie and Sunny in France.I found the book shallow and many descriptions melodramatic. It likely appeals to readers who follow movie stars and celebrities.
The author uses dogs and their relationships with their owners to illustrate shallow lives as well as true-blue characters. Mac and Sunny will continue investigating together and jet-setting around the world, but I don't plan to read any more of the series. The interwoven story lines also made this enjoyable, though on a few occasions I felt the number of people who seem to come to the same private investigator, unbeknownst to each other and in relation to the same overall set of problems, was a little over the top and not believable. To the author's credit though, this is fiction so of course there is room for all the creative license one would like to employ, but I am sometimes a bit put off by the moments where I go 'really?!'
- it just seems to me to be easier to get into a story like this when there is at least some feeling that things going on could actually happen. The only other thing I didn't love as much about this book was the way the relationship between Mac and Sunny shaped up and played out. We are introduced to Sunny as being Mac's 'on again, off again' girlfriend who wanted to get married though Mac is 'happy how things are'. I won't throw in a spoiler, but will just say that the state of their relationship at the end of the book was a bit disappointing, though not for the normal reasons. This didn't originally bother me when first reading, as I was not aware that this was the first book in a series, but upon realizing that there were additional books, I was bit bummed out. The 'on again, off again' and 'will they or won't they' scenario is one that has a lot of potential in a series.
Yes, it can be somewhat annoying sometimes when the latest book or episode leaves you wondering until the next comes out, but in the end it is one of the great elements that they know will keep readers and viewers coming back, and I think too much happened in this one story that could have been spread out over at least one, if not two, other books that would have added to the desire to read the next one.Otherwise, a great lazy hammock afternoon read! 1.5.Adler writes romantic suspense / chick-lit. The story has the characters traveling to Italy, Mexico and France in pursuit of a murderer. The writing is hackneyed, and the characters one-dimensional. Worse, the plot twists are so incredible as to be plain ridiculous. I’ve read some of her other books and thought they were fun beach reads.
I think she got carried away with this one and tried to do too much. I didn’t care at all about the relationship between Mac and Sunny. Actress Allie Ray’s adventures in the South of France were the best part. That might have made an entertaining read all on its own. How does drivel like this get published! Is finna drop a new album called Stay Trippy, and this new track – a collaboration with ‘s Abel Tesfaye – shows the Dirty South rapper in a state of grim, dirty contemplation not seen since his inaugural poem, “Slob On My Knob.” Or at least, Juicy J hangs back while XO does the thinking.Abel Tesfaye really carries the track, his foggy falsetto starting off wistful and layered over a fluttery arpeggio piano. Then the beat drops the song straight into the back-corner sullen strip-club sex feel that defines, in different ways, the musical oeuvres of Juicy J and the Weeknd both. Tesfaye slithers: “She can’t feel her throat, she can’t feel her knees, and I’m not tryna talk, I’m not tryna walk, just lift me out the club.” Just one of those nights, huh? Bonus points if you get stuck on the throwback bounce-beat snap in the background and end up listening to this song on repeat, waiting for “Forgot About Dre” to cut in.STREAM: Juicy J – “One Of Those Nights (Ft.
