This Defenders custom expansion adds the following new cards (203 total):- 10 Heroes: Black Knight, Nighthawk, Hellcat, Son of Satan, Valkyrie, Clea, Dr. Strange, Namor, Hulk, Silver Surfer- Defenders for a Day Stack with 45 unique cards- Dormammu Mastermind and Dark Dimension Villains- 2 Schemes and 1 Special BystanderThe coolest addition is the Defenders for a Day Stack. The stack consists of 45 unique cards of characters that were once in the Defenders, including those who were 'Defenders for a Day.' The cards are like Sidekicks where you can only use them once, but they cost 4 and are shuffled at the beginning of the game. Individually, they are equivalent to a cost of about 6 (some are more/less powerful), but they can only be used once before they are removed from the game. The effects on most cards reflect that character's Hero cards, so many of the card effects in Legendary are captured. The rules sheet at the end of this post summarizes the other rules with the Defenders for a Day Stack.Defenders for a Day Stack:45 characters (1 of each).
Heroes:There are 10 new Heroes that have the Defenders affiliation. I originally made 6 new Defenders Heroes, but it made sense to also make Dr. Strange, Namor, Hulk, and Silver Surfer in a Defenders version.
I know many people don't like having duplicate Heroes, but these versions are fun to play with and relate well to the rest of the expansion set. Some of the cards have the new keyword Defend, which means: 'During your turn, you may discard this card from your hand to ignore any one Ambush or Fight effect of a Villain.' The rules sheet highlights other rules with this keyword.Black Knight. Edit: I have set up a Printerstudio order for those of you who want to use this option for printing.
Thanks to for posting the card back file and how to share projects on that site. Use the following link and the directions in his post to purchase the printed cards.
Keep in mind that the site offers free shipping over $30, but you have to input the code (SHIP30). Also, since the next available order size is 216 cards, I added a Morlocks mastermind (Callisto) and villain group that I created here to fill out the rest of the cards.Have fun! This is some seriously awesome work. The 'Defenders for a Day' mechanism is so thematic. Just brilliant.Dormammu is perfect!Valkyrie: I'm in love with Valkyrie! Great artwork.
I love the interaction with the KO pile.Hellcat: You hit a homerun here. Love the mechanisms.Silver Surfer: Interesting take, certainly thematically appropriate for the Defenders, although I'd probably personally prefer him to be more powerful since he's one of my favorite characters. I'd maybe add 'Draw a card' on his rare though, so it's not a dead card in your hand or gain it directly to your Victory Pile.Black Knight: Very cool!Clea: My only disappointment. The artwork is not up to the standards of the other cards.
I imagine it is hard to find good Clea artwork? I like the effects on the cards though. Is it okay to tell you I love you?Haha, seriously great work here! Cards look amazing, and I'm so happy to see Black Knight and Hellcat out and about. Now i'm torn between my own Son of Satan or yours - though I definitely see a game featuring both. Also very happy to see a solid Dormammu custom!Really great job.
May I ask what program you used to make them? Thanks a lot! I used a free trial of Photoshop and printed them with PrinterStudio. I've got the PrinterStudio-ready png files (sized for the bleed areas); if anyone would like those, I can post them too. Is it okay to tell you I love you?Haha, seriously great work here!

I like the effects on the cards though.Hope you have fun with it! One of my personal favorites is Dr. Strange- his cards work really well with this set.
I was able to find some pretty cool artwork for most of the heroes, but yes, Clea was difficult to find. Since there are two different art styles, I used the newer ones as the commons and 'older' ones as the uncommon/rare to kind of separate the two styles. I have never printed any custom cards. Would someone post, step by step, how to get this set from here to my hands? If the card quality matches the cards from Upper Deck, I REALLY want this NOW.I use PrinterStudio to print customs and the cards look almost identical to the official ones. I'm going to post PrinterStudio-ready files in a zip folder and post in the files section once it goes through BGG.
Another option is to download these images (which are higher resolution than the zip files because there is a size limit in the files section), then use Photoshop or another program to set the bleed area so it fits in PrinterStudio templates. Another user posted a Photoshop action for doing this that I used a while ago for other customs. Here are the steps:1) Printerstudio.com- select 63x88mm custom front & back cards2) Make card quality linen3) Start uploading the PrinterStudio-ready files4) Upload the same back for all cards (I'll have to find the post where I found this, but it works well after adjusting the brightness). Quick questionWhy do the defenders for a day cards not share a consistent common/uncommon/rare format? Some have the common border, others the uncommon border, and a few have no border.Nevermind, read the schemes. If your trial for photoshop runs out, I would be more than happy to make any fixes that people may request. The borders on the Defenders for a Day cards are meant to signify three groups: the 17 characters who were Defenders for a Day (common border), 24 who were recurring Defenders members throughout the years (uncommon border), and the 4 founders (rare border). It's kind of thematic and doesn't have anything to do with the card effects.
The text at the bottom gives a description of which group they are or when they became a member (i.e. 1970s Defenders Recruit).Hopefully I don't have to make any more changes- I've made a lot of adjustments from playtesting and already printed them.
So you haven't been eating, sleeping or going to work lately thenThere's a lot of work here and it is a fantastic effort!!Just some comments (I have not gone over all the cards as there are soooo many, so apologies in advance if I have missed the point on some of the ideas):-As said before, Silver Surfer has many cards that just go to his Victory Pile, including his Defender card. That is not attractive to co-op players as they won't care about VPs. Unless there is some mechanic that references them to make use of it (may have not read that stuff yet). No big deal, co-op players can simply not use that Hero.-The Defender cards idea is very good.
The only problem that may happen is that as they are generally overpowered (even though they are one use), at the start and most of the game, most recruiting will be from the Defender stack until it is depleted and then players will start to pick away at the HQ. If the Defender cards had more triggers on them, maybe it would encourage players to mix up their recruiting more.-The Mastermind tactics seem a bit 'standard' for this expansion. You have this great Dark Magic Spell idea and never use it in the tactics. You could for example have a tactic like, 'Place a Bystander over each Villain in the city as a Dark Magic Spell and draw a card for each Bystander placed'. But if what you have done is the theme that you wanted, then it is totally fine-Not sure about commons having the ability to stop an Ambush, maybe just on uncommons and/or rares, but that is just me. Defend to stop Fight effects seems fine if it's cost is not too cheap. Not going to mention some of the art is not on par with the others as I know how hard it is to find appropriate selections to match a theme of a set you are working on. I generally try and avoid text in the pictures or attempt to manipulate it out.doesn't always work though.Once again, very nice work!

Regarding what you wrote about the Defenders for a Day cards- what I've found from playing is that recruiting a lot of DfaD cards at the beginning will put you at a disadvantage later because 1) they are only one-time effects so you're not really building a better deck overall and 2) they are generally much stronger on attack than recruit. They supplement your cards in the right scenario but relying solely on those cards is not the best strategy in my opinion. With the Defend keyword, you must discard the card in order to block the Ambush or Fight effect, so you have to decide whether you want to use the card effects during your turn or block the attack.
Most of the Fight effects on villains are good for the player and many villains don't have Ambush. I've found that Defend is not used all too often, but is useful at the right time.
I haven't had a problem with commons being overpowered because of Defend but if it ends up causing a problem, I could make some adjustments.Like you said, it was very difficult to find art for some of these characters. Text in the pictures bothers me too, so I make sure none of the images have them or I have to edit the image with Photoshop (which I had to do a lot for some of them).
I wish I found better art for Clea uncommon/rare and Son of Satan uncommon, but unfortunately I couldn't.Again, thanks for the feedback!
