Popkin is Professor of History and Chair of the Department at the University of Kentucky. He has published a number of books on French history and the history of the press, including The Right-Wing Press in France, 1792-1800 (1980), News and Politics in the Age of Revolution: Jean Luzac's 'Gazette de Leyde' (1989), Revolutionary News: The Press in France, 1789-1799 (1990), A History of Modern France (1994), and A Short History of the French Revolution (1998). Popkin is also editor of Panorama of Paris: Selections from Le Tableau de Paris by Louis-Sebastien Mercier (Penn State, 1999).
