The IEEE1394 (firewire) port can be used for transferring digital video to a PC for archiving, but it is limited by the copy protection coding that programming providers embedded in the data with the digital video. When transferring digital video by the method referred to above, copy protection restriction will apply. The recordings will play from the other device only if the programming provider has not encoded the digital content with a 'copy never' command. Some programming sources encode them with a 'copy once' command which allows you to transfer it once but if you try to transfer it again the content becomes unplayable. There are more MCE specific items included in the package, if you are using using XP then you only need the driver. You may also want to play with the channel changing software, which works on both XP and MCE. DishNetwork DVR`s use the LINUX Operating System which generate.ext2.ext3, and.ext4 files which are not recognized by Windows NTFS file structured directories. However mone can do a Google Search for Ext2fsd to get a Linux Files viewer that runs on your PC.When you look at the External Hard Drive attached to your PC via the USB cable, you will see about 3 files associated with each recorded event on the Ext Dr. I`m sure these are heaily encripted to protect the Right Owner`s Content.
Amd, who knows, just like you can do 2 and 3 pass emcoding of a movie. They maybe could encript it 2 or more times. So, I don`t think it is even feasible to try to digitally decode the contend. However, there is what is called the 'Analog Loophole' since video is converted back to analog signals, thus loosing some of its sharpness & other qualities. For some time now I have been using a AverMedia DVR video-capture card - around $99.99 @ Amazon.
This has the traditional composit, s-video and Component video inputs that can used in the Analog Loop hole mode. In addition it has High Definition HDMI inbut connector.
You can use an eSATA hard drive rather than a USB though. It will replace the internal drive rather than add to it. Some work better than others. Do a search on eSATATher USB ports on the HD DVRs (and the SD ones too), but you can`t use them for external storage. So far they provide power (some people use them to power external cooling fans), serial port emulation for remote receiver control, and in the case of the HR21 HD DVR to connect the AM21 ATSC OTA tuner. DirecTV doesn`t use the for external storage the way Dish does.
